Flip the Script

I write about domestic violence because I am impelled by noble impulses and a desire to bring awareness and eradication of this evil. Such awareness it is hoped will motivate whole communities and their leaders to act to eliminate this accursed thing from among us thus creating a new narrative. We can no longer remain silent as in being silent we will all be complicit in a system that allows for the dismantling of our families and the warping our offspring for generation to come.

Each small step in this direction would collectively amount to a giant leap over this seemingly unscaleable wall. Let’s flip the script on domestic violence and its retarding effects.

The poem below captures the impact of abuse:

Scripting (2003)

She penned the life that was to be;

naivety and bliss of youth

furnished its tone and hue.

Then life, the chameleon, reared its head,

smudging the masterpiece.

A good educator but

an ethereal marriage but

a beautiful baby but

the marauding twins—

pain and abuse invaded her lair,

eventuating the destruction

of almost everything

classically holy,

issuing forth from this paramour

her lone Romeo

throwing her empire into chaos.

The action never follows

the script the author pens.

  1. Love the poem! This is an issue that has to be talked about and even more important how to get help when dealing with this or knowing someone who is dealing with domestic violence. I am recently divorced because my ex began to be abusive, our son took the brunt of it and it always seemed to happen when I was out of the room. So to make a long story short, I tried everything to get help from marriage/family counseling to parenting classes. I would recommend counseling for anyone going through this because when you’re lost they can guide you and look for signs…
The hard thing to get over in this situation is the gradual cycle. at first it’s little things that strike you wrong and you think talking it out works, but then it happens again, and with each cycle the turn around speeds up and gets more abusive.
I stayed longer than I would like to because on top of that I was literally dying from a rare liver disease I was born with, then had the recovery I had to deal with…
Happily now, my kids (ages 8 and 9) and I live in the safety and comfort of my parents home until I can get back on my feet. My ex has continued counseling and is becoming a better person for our kids…As for my health, the Doctors call me a miracle because I recovered so well and in record timing. (a mothers love will do that, along side the help from the Lord and angels… I’m blessed!)

      1. I will have to take a look at that book when I get the chance. I know people who have dealt with it and it’s so difficult to get through. That’s great that you have transcended that.

  2. Your writing is so powerful. It’s so true that the action tends not to follow the script we write – but hopefully we can always add a new chapter.

  3. What a moving poem. “Her lone Romeo”… Thank you for bringing some awareness towards domestic violence. Everyone should have a safe and violent-free home. Violence towards your loved ones is unforgiving.

  4. I love this poem. You can feel the pain just from reading it. My husband and I parted ways because he was beginning to be abusive and I did not want my kids to grow up in an environment where verbal abuse was a daily occurrence. True that the impact is long lasting. My sons are so overprotective of their girlfriends, it is just like they have that “need” to shield them from any kind of abuse.
